Master your LinkedIn Messaging – Who, how and templates that convert

Let’s set the scene.

You’re attending a networking event. There you meet a business executive you’d like to get to know. Perhaps you like the way he runs his business and want to run yours in the same way or perhaps he is a subject-matter expert in your field.

Would you feel comfortable walking up to this businessman and blurting out your request or question without prior introductions? Likely not. However, this occurs on LinkedIn all the time!

The amazing thing about messaging on LinkedIn is that you can form connections with virtually anyone or anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, too many people are squandering this golden opportunity; and those that are taking a chance and sending out messages, are relying on brief messages that don’t motivate the receiver to connect. It’s not sufficient to send a message like “Can we connect?” or “I’d like to connect with you”. Not only is it unprofessional but lazy as well.

Salespeople thrive on LinkedIn. This platform is used by them to research leads, join and take part in groups and message connections and customers with meaningful content. However what if you write valuable insight or an intriguing blog post that you want to send to a particular person on LinkedIn? How do you send messages to 2nd and 3rd degree or out-of-network connections about your content? Is it possible to send your message via InMail?

Listed below, are easy steps that you can use to send a message on LinkedIn:

Sending Messages To Your Connections – Simple Outreach

Step #1- On your profile, select ‘My Network’.

Step #2- Select ‘Connections’ from the left sidebar. This will pull up a list of all your current connections.

Step #3- Select the Connection whom you’d like to contact. This will pull up their LinkedIn profile.

Step #4- On your contact’s LinkedIn profile, click on the blue ‘Message’ icon. This is listed on your connection’s profile page.

Step #5- Compose a personalised message. Then click enter to send the message.

Sending Messages To A 2nd Degree Connection

What is a 2nd-degree connection? On LinkedIn, a 2nd-degree connection occurs when two parties have a mutual connection.

If you’ve got LinkedIn InMail, a premium account feature, then you can directly message any 2nd-degree connections without being connected. You only have to open the 2nd-degree person’s profile and click on the “InMail” button. Then you can compose and mail your message. InMail messages can have up to 200 characters in the subject line and up to 1900 characters in the body. It’s important to keep in mind that your email signature is counted in the total number of available characters.

Give them reason to reply by asking for advice, opinions, referrals.

Once your invitation is accepted by the 2nd-degree connection, send a personal message.

Sending Messages to 3rd Degree Connections

Step #1- Visit your 3rd-degree connection’s LinkedIn profile page.

Step #2- Check to see if both the person’s last and first names appear on the page. If both names are on display, then you will be able to see the “Connect” button. This is a blue icon that enables you to send a direct invitation to the 3rd connection. Once you’re connected, compose a personalised message and send it.

Step #3- If you only notice the first letter of the connection’s last name on display, then you won’t be able to select “Connect”. However, you may still send a message via InMail.

Sending Messages to LinkedIn Group Members

Don’t miss out on this opportunity

To send a free message directly to a group member:

  1. Navigate to your Groups homepage
  2. Click the number of members in the group to the right of the group name.
  3. Click the Message button to the right of the member’s name. This button will only appear if the member’s settings allow them to be contacted by other group members.
  4. Create your message and click Send.

You can send 15 free 1:1 group messages to fellow group members each month. This limit is set for all the groups you belong to and not for each group individually. If you go over the limit, you’ll see an error message until the next month begins.

Sending Messages to Out-Of-Network Connections

LinkedIn members who fall outside the categories listed above. Profiles out of your network have limited visibility but if the option is available, you can also send them an InMail to introduce yourself.

Best regards, ____________”

“Hi __________! It was great meeting you at the _____________(name of event) in (city) last week. I really enjoyed hearing about how you’re (give context to what you spoke about) – I’d like to follow your work and watch your progress! Best regards, ___________”

A CELEBRITY/INFLUENCER/LEADER IN YOUR INDUSTRY

“Hi _________, I’ve been following your content and I’m so impressed with all you’ve accomplished. I recently read/listened to interview/watched video of you, I’d love to discover more about your work. Best regards ____________”

SOMEBODY THAT WENT TO THE SAME UNIVERSITY AS YOU
